Shaara's background provided the insight to see both sides of the conflict. The story has been described as more of a long short story than a novel. At the time of his death Shaara left behind a number of projects. With the exception of the Foreword, which is written in the present tense, the entire book is written in the third person, past tense.
Each chapter within a section is from a different person's viewpoint, though the overall viewpoint of the novel is omniscient. These included an autobiography, the screenplay for The Killer Angels, a book on Shakespeare, and an unpublished novel about baseball, written several years earlier.
