It gives a sense of being out of control and messed up.
The English term has subtly negative connotations. We are used to having to overcome appearances, to take a step away from what looks natural, given extra knowledge. Much of the rest of the book was similarly unsatisfying. Your brain is entirely convinced that action at a distance is not real.
