Only afterward had she fallen apart. We laughed, we cried, we shared our stories, we laughed at our mistakes and gave each other virtual hugs. For example, the father who was the base for their entire story, depending on who you ask, did not even exchange so much as a call with his son, wife or daughter-in-law. It appeared benign enough, and a reprieve from those shoes would be heaven.
She tried to fend them off, but tendrils of that old connection still haunted her. It would likely continue to do so for years to come.
She thought better of asking him to elaborate. He was the proverbial Loch Ness monster. Knox poured on a killer grin and still somehow managed to look sheepish. This last time was just too public.
